Auldgate Music produces tapes and CD's of Scottish and Irish folk songs and traditional sacred poems in Gaelic and English, many of which are taken from the Carmina Gadelica of Alexander Carmichael. Its aims are to make a living connection with ancient Scottish and Irish folk music, Gregorian chant, Gaelic poems and prayers. Their meaning, resonance and the atmosphere they create, provide the primary inspiration for Ellen Wycherley's compositions. As in the Ancient classical celtic tradition, the carefully considered use of the spoken word is used in performance as a preamble to any piece of music. As the music progresses, so the spoken word may be used again at intervals to reflect on what has been heard and to set the scene of the next part of the piece, thereby taking the listener to ever greater depths of hearing.
